Recently, when I looked at the immediate performance I did in the streets of Hamburg a while ago and the small sculptures I made quickly from randomly found industrial waste, I recalled the first time I felt my body connecting and merging with the urban environment and the gaps in the tiles in Glasgow last winter. In Hamburg, as a temporary tourist, I did my best, while not trying too hard, to try to meet the "thing" I was interested in on the side of the street, and then to take possession of the "thing". I danced with it, I talked to it, I held it in my palm, its 5.2 kg weight and gravity fought against my lifting. Finally, I watched it stand in a classic white cube type gallery, below the average eye level of the people. I positioned the video of the performance in a space where the walls were sandwiched between them, and people crouched down, switching different angles to peer through the gaps in its body to see mine. There, it looks so silent and calm, yet it clamours in my head. It may not belong here. It is an ecology nurtured by the city, and in the end I have 'returned' it to the trunk of the tree that grew out of Hamburg's urban planning. I returned to Glasgow. But I've already felt a disenchantment with it.
