Profile

Liu Jiachen (b.2000), an artist from Northeast China, based in China and Glasgow. In 2022, she graduated with her undergraduate degree from the China Academy of Art, Institute of Arts and Humanities, majoring in Art Theory. Currently, she graduated from MA Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art. In her works and exhibitions, she constantly tries and predicts what kind of temporary connections she will make with different environments. She builds a bridge between the alienation of the self and the anthropomorphisation of objects, exploring the tripartite interaction between people, objects and spaces.

Artist Statement

In my practice, I concentrate on two principal inquiries: how is the relationship between anthropomorphism and alienation established? What are the connections and interactions between machinery, objects and body parts?
Since living in Glasgow, I have frequently observed objects situated within the interstices of the urban environment, and have done so with an unconscious tendency to anthropomorphise them. I establish a connection with these objects through the utilisation of mediums such as sculpture and performance. Furthermore, I endeavour to anticipate the transient connections I will forge with diverse environments. By exploring the ways in which objects, represented by sandbags, are confined within organised organisms as conceptualised by Deleuze and Guattari, and how they are transformed into 'organ-less' objects that break through their confinement and move through different materials, I aim to bridge the gap between the alienation of the self and the anthropomorphisation of objects. In doing so, I seek to examine the tripartite interactions between human beings, objects and space. Furthermore, I aim to highlight the potential for alienation of everyday objects and spaces.
